Taichung Goodbye Speech
6 weeks.
6 weeks since I’ve arrived in Taichung on this volunteering program - and I have learnt and experienced many things during my time here.
My status as a foreigner always had mixed reactions – some people would shy away at first, not sure how to interact with me with what English they know, whilst some would welcome the opportunity to practice their English. Either way, it was evident that most students and adults haven’t had much chances to interact with foreigners before, and that my presence here had a meaning.
Your teachers and I, realised I can make a difference here.
So, I decided to make most of my time on this program.
I tasted stinky Tofu and other many special Taiwanese food. Drank many, many cups of Bubble Tea, rode a scooter, learnt cha dao, discovered how Taiwan’s winter isn’t really winter, and taught classes after classes - all for the first time here in Taiwan.
I was shocked by how delicious school lunch is and how students and teachers alike would sleep in middle of school.
I met precious friends, colleagues and discovered a second home away from home.
Whilst staying with my 2 wonderful host families, I experienced what life is truly like living in Taiwan
I also saw how incredibly hardworking people in Taiwan is.
Waking up at 5:30am every day, just to catch a bus and make it to school by 7:20 – I’ve experienced the long hours and how tiring it can all be.
But it’s not only the students. I also saw the hidden world of the hard work the teachers do to run a school like Rih-nan. I think, when you’re a student, it’s easy to miss the how much time your teacher has put into a well-prepared class. It was eye opening, and reminded me how important their work is.
I guess what I want to say is: Thank you.
Thank you for your smiles, the hellos in the corridors, your gifts and your teachings.
Thank you for your kindness, your warmth and your dedication to education.
Thank you for making me feel part of Rih-nan. Thank you for being my friend.
Taiwan is a small, small country. But it is filled with wonderful people like everyone here. And I hope the rest of the world could see it too. So, dream big, travel, maybe even volunteer… and show the world what you are made of!
